An order for Evening Praise and Prayer

PROCLAMATION OF THE LIGHT
You may light a candle and say:
Light and peace in Jesus Christ.
Thanks be to God.

EVENING HYMN: O Gladsome Light
United Methodist Hymnal 686
Ancient Greek Hymn; translated by Robert S. Bridges 1899
Music by Louis Bourgeois, 1547; harm. by Claude Goudimel, 1551

O gladsome light, O grace of our Creator's face,
the eternal splendor wearing;
celestial, holy blest, our Savior Jesus Christ,
joyful in your appearing!

As fades the day's last light we see the lamps of night,
our common hymn outpouring,
O God of might unknown, you, the incarnate Son,
and Spirit blest adoring.

To you of right belongs all praise of holy songs,
O Son of God, life-giver.
You, therefore, O Most High, the world does glorify
and shall exalt forever.

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
We praise and thank you, O God,
for you are without beginning and without end.
Through Christ, you created the whole world;
through Christ, you preserve it.
You made the day for the works of light and the night for the refreshment of our minds and our bodies.
Keep us now in Christ; grant us a peaceful evening,
a night free from sin; and bring us at last to eternal life.
Through Christ and in the Holy Spirit,
we offer you all glory, honor, and worship, now and forever. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE
Together, let us pray
for the people of this congregation...
for those who suffer and those in trouble...
for the concerns of this local community...
for the world, its peoples, and its leaders...
for the earth you have given to our care…
for the Church universal—its leaders, its members, and its mission...
in communion with the saints….

THE LORD'S PRAYER
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
forever. Amen.

BLESSING
The grace of Jesus Christ enfold you.
Go in peace. Thanks be to God.
