Palms Down, Palms Up

As we get closer to Lent my mind has been on my personal devotional practice. One way of praying that has been transformation for me is called “Centering Down” or “Palms Up, Palms Down.” Richard Foster describes this practice in his book “The Celebration of Discipline.”

First, sit comfortably and breathe deeply. Placing your palms down on your lap or knees become aware of what you are carrying. Anxiety? Stress? Worry? Anger? With your palms down, as a symbol of release, tell God everything you carry and as you do, let it go.

When you are ready to move on, turn your palms up, as a symbol that you are ready to receive good gifts from God. What do you need instead of anxiety? What can God give you to replace your anger? Remember these words of Jesus from Matthew 7:7, “Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened for you.”

When you have finished asking for God’s grace, continue to sit for awhile, letting God love you and opening your heart and mind to what God desires for you to know.
